Explore Lexington's Rich History Through Photographs & Oral Stories

Preserving the Past: Library History

We’re celebrating Library Lovers’ Month with the launch of the new Local History Digital Collections website.

This website provides access to items from the library’s collection that are of cultural interest, historical significance or unique to Lexington County. The collection includes photographs, audio recordings and rare, one-of-a-kind printed materials. Many of these items are from the South Carolina Room of Lexington Main Library.

The first published collection highlights the unique history of the library system, from its start in 1912 at the Batesburg Town Hall until today. The website features a timeline of the library’s history, over 150 photographs and indexes for finding resources in the South Carolina Room.

Richard Taylor

The library previously collaborated with the South Carolina State Library and the University of South Carolina to digitize and publish the Richard Taylor collection. Richard Taylor was a freelance photographer who took photographs between 1940 and 1976, featuring the daily life and activities of county residents.

Want to explore more about the history of Lexington County and the surrounding Midlands? We have an extensive collection of titles about the people, places and history of South Carolina.
