spoil your mixed breed pup

National Mutt Day

If you’re anything like me, fur babies hold a very special place in my heart. Did you know that there’s a distinct holiday to celebrate our pups? July 31 is National Mutt Day — it’s a day to spoil our mixed breeds and to raise awareness for those who need a fur-ever home. Back in the 1800s, the word “mutt” was considered to be a demeaning term that means “stupid person.” Let’s just call them mixed breeds, because dogs are extremely smart animals.

Ways to Spoil Your Mixed Breed on National Mutt Day

  • Take your dog to get a pup cup from Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks or Dairy Queen. If your pooch prefers peanut butter, check out your local snow-cone shop for a pet-friendly treat.
  • Get your dogs active by going on a walk at Saluda Shoals, Cayce Riverwalk or in your neighborhood. Just remember if the ground is too hot to touch using your hands, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
  • Let your dog pick out a new toy from a local pet shop or get crafty and make DIY doggie treats.

How to Honor National Mutt Day

  • Adopt a dog at your local shelter.
  • Donate money, toys or food to an animal shelter.
  • Spend some time volunteering at your local animal shelter.
