Spark the Magic of Summer Reading

Color Your World

As the days grow longer and the sun brightens our world, summer offers the perfect background for a colorful, fun trip — through books and exciting programs at your local Lexington County Public Library (LCPL). This year, our Summer Reading Program, Color Our World, is more than just a way to keep kids busy. It’s a free opportunity to dive into stories, inspire imagination and explore new ideas for all ages.

Discover something new, explore diverse cultures or simply relax with a great book. Our Summer Reading Program helps turn summer into a season of growth, connection and fun.

The Bright Benefits of Summer Reading

Avoid the “summer slide” — Kids can lose up to two months of progress over summer break without regular reading. Reading over the summer helps kids keep their skills sharp so they’re ready for school in the fall.

Spark imagination — books encourage kids to dream big, ask questions and think outside the box.

Strengthen parent-child connection — reading together is quality time. Whether it’s bedtime stories or a shared chapter book, it builds strong bonds and sparks meaningful conversations.

Encourage lifelong learning — kids who read for fun become curious, engaged learners, excited to explore the world around them.

How the Summer Reading Program Works

  • Sign up anytime at lexcolibrary.beanstack.org or with the Beanstack Tracker app (available on Android and iOS systems). Open to all ages — from toddlers and teens to adults.
  • Log your reading and activities from May 30 through August 1 using Beanstack or with a paper log, available online at lexcolibrary.com/summerreading or any LCPL branch.
  • Earn badges, prizes and entries into grand prize drawings. Begin picking up prizes on June 13.

Explore Colorful Programs

Summer Reading at the library isn’t just about books — it’s about celebrating stories in all their forms.
  • Spark your child’s imagination with Story Art, a showcase of stories told by our own master story artists, especially for families with young kids.
  • Kids and teens can unleash their inner spark through hands-on experiences at Wild Colors, Fabric Frenzy or Epoxy Drip.
  • Teens and adults can create unique and colorful rain chains at Drip, Drop, Rainbows.
  • Adults, spark your creativity and unleash your inner artist with Sketch & Smudge.
  • Meet bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe for an evening of inspiration.
Visit lexcolibrary.com/programs for more information about these and other exciting programs all year long.

Ignite Your Creativity

This summer, discover a world full of color, creativity and fun. Find how-to guides and craft ideas on Hobbies & Crafts Source, learn a new language with Transparent Language or take a virtual museum tour. Sing loud, talk often and play hard — there’s something for everyone to enjoy literacy in every form.

  • The Louvre Museum (Paris, France) Step into the world of art with a virtual tour of masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo.
  • The British Museum (London, UK) Travel through time and explore ancient artifacts, from Egyptian mummies to Greek sculptures.
  • The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (Washington, D.C., USA) Embark on a virtual journey to see the Hope Diamond, dinosaur fossils and more.
  • The Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Vincent van Gogh.

Share your summer fun and show off your “reading rainbows” using #LexCoLibrary and #ColorOurWorld on social media.
