S.C. PLANTS THE SEED![]()
Want some fresh vegetables? Pelion Branch Library received a book award grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for their S.C. Plants the Seed program this summer. The grant provides the library with childrenโs books on topics related to food and nutrition that will be used as giveaways at three educational programs this summer. The books are appropriate for all grade levels and include books in Spanish.
As part of the program, Pelion Branch Library has partnered with local farmer Catherine Porth from Grannies Grub Co-Op who will provide produce to sell this Thursday, August 1 from 2 to 6 PM. A nutrition educator from DHEC will also be present to talk to families and offer a fun nutritional snack. Children will be able to choose a free book and listen to a special storytime. Children can also explore the libraryโs square foot garden and register to plant a vegetable in our fall garden.
According to Shirley Sprenne, Pelion Branch Librarian, the projectโs goals are to increase access to fresh, local food options for rural patrons and to give away nutritional literacy books to families with children.
The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal support for the nation’s libraries and museums. They advance, support, and empower Americaโs museums, libraries, and related organizations through grant making, research, and policy development. Their vision is a nation where museums and libraries work together to transform the lives of individuals and communities.
