Anne Clarkson, a retired veteran residing in Batesburg, will discuss World War I African-American history in South Carolina. Clarkson had a long career as a military police officer and was assigned to the 32nd Army Air Defense Command in Darmstadt, Germany. She did historical research on the 371st Infantry and Corporal Freddie Stowers, the first African-American Medal of Honor Awardee in World War I. Clarkson’s research is now in the museum at Ft. Jackson and is part of the information at both the SC State Museum and the National Archives. Clarkson has been interviewed by the PBS television docuseries History Detectives, when it was discovered that she owns one of only two WWI flags of the 371st Infantry. (ages 18+)
