What’s all the Hoopla About?
Books, ebooks, audiobooks, movies and television shows are all items accessible through the library...
In the last couple years (and particularly in the winter months), you may have stumbled upon a certain word … “hygge.” But what in the world does it mean exactly? First, let’s start with how you say it.
It’s pronounced “hoo-gah,” and even though the Danish concept can’t be translated into a single word — it encompasses a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through by savoring the simple things in life. If you’ve ever enjoyed reading a book indoors on a rainy Sunday (and we know you have) or a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter day, you’ve experienced hygge without even knowing it.
To the Danish, it’s a way of life. It’s not only a part of their well-being, it’s built into the foundations of their relationships with family and friends, it’s embodied in the things that surround them, in the comforts and decor at home and work, it’s indulging in the good things in life that warm their heart, and most of all, it’s about being mindful and present to enjoy all the pleasures life brings — simple and small, winter, spring or fall, 365 days a year.
Sounds dreamy, right? Now you’re wondering, “how hard is it” and “how much is it going to cost me?” Don’t worry. It’s not complicated and you more than likely already have everything you need to get started. Here are some ways that you can incorporate hygge into your lifestyle:
